Kumba is an online marketplace and booking platform that brings people together from all around the world to enjoy new cultures and experiences in Africa and create new memories. Local Hosts, tour guides and tour companies offer Single and Multi-Day Experiences directly to travellers. Sign up now and begin to look for unique, out-of-the-box experiences in any African country!

An experience is a tour or activity provided by locals, individual tour guides and tour operating companies across Africa. If it lasts a few hours to a full-day, it is referred to as a Single-Day Experience. If it last 2 or more days, it is referred to as a Multi-Day Experience.

Kumba Hosts (locals, individual tour guides and tour operating companies) from all parts of Africa provide a wide range of experiences such as cooking workshops, wine-tasting, hiking, safari tours, local arts and crafts, snorkeling, crab-catching, a local dinner at a family’s home, historical tours, interactive African drumming, traditional dance classes and so on. The experiences are endless and amazing! They can range in length from Single day experiences that last from 2-10 hours, to all-inclusive Multi-day immersions and tours that last as long as 14 days. You can also request Customized Experiences that are tailored towards your preferences and budget, by clicking on ‘Plan Trip’.

You can sign-up by creating an account via our mobile apps or website: http://kumbafrica.co/. Simply go to the website and click on ‘Sign Up’ to sign-up. If you are an Android user, you can also download the mobile app from the Google Play Store. Simply search for ‘Kumba Africa’ and sign up as a ‘Traveler’. After you’ve selected to become a Traveller, please fill in your profile. Once you’re done, you can start searching and booking for one of the unique experiences offered.

The prices you see on the apps and website are the prices you pay as a Traveller. No additional fees are charged.

Payment

You will not be charged for a booking until it is confirmed. This can take up to 48 hours after you have made the booking. Once it is confirmed by the Host, the payment will be processed and collected by Kumba. You will never pay before the booking is confirmed by the Host.

You need to make a payment to Kumba via debit or credit card, Google Pay, Apple Pay or Paypal, before the Experience takes place, in order to confirm a booking.

  • 100% of the Experience Fee, is deducted from your preferred payment option IF you are booking a Single-Day Experience.
  • 50% of the Experience is deducted IF you are booking a Multi-Day Experience at least 31 days before the start date of the Experience. This is considered an initial deposit, and it is non-refundable. The remaining 50% can be made by authorizing the payment yourself if you click on ‘Dashboard’ in the Menu Bar, followed by going to the ‘Upcoming’ sub-section in the ‘Bookings’ portal. Unless you contact us at: hello@kumbafrica.co to cancel your booking or click on ‘Cancel’ for your upcoming Experience booking, you will be liable for the remaining 50%. Failure to make the remaining payment at least 30 days before the start date of the Experience, will result in a forfeited booking and no refund. Kumba releases the payment to your Host on your behalf. You may also pay 100% of the Experience Fee for a Multi-Day Experience, instead of paying an initial deposit, if you wish, at the time of making a booking.
  • 00% of the Experience Fee is deducted IF you are booking a Multi-Day Experience 30 days or less before the start date of the Experience. This means that full payment is required if you book 30 days or less before the start date of a requested Experience.

You can pay using your debit or credit card, Google Wallet, Apple Pay or PayPal to Kumba. We are also working on a new payment method that will allow you to pay an initial deposit (5% of the Experience Fee) for a Single-Day Experience using any of the aforementioned payment methods, and then paying the remaining 95% as cash upon arrival on the start date of the Experience.

Kumba Single-Day Experience Cancellation Policy

  • Traveler will be refunded an amount equal to Total Fees less Non-Refundable Expenses for Single-Day Experiences if (i) the Traveler cancels or requests to cancel the Single-Day Experience at least 7 days before the confirmed scheduled start date of the Single-Day Experience. The Host must remit 100% of the Listing Fee less any Non-Refundable Expenses within 7 days of receiving notice of the cancellation.
  • If a Traveler booked the Single-Day Experience 7 days before the scheduled start date of the Single-Day Experience and cancels or requests to cancel the Single-Day Experience 3-6 days before the confirmed scheduled start date of the Single-Day Experience, the Traveler will be refunded an amount equal to 50% of Total Fees less any Non-Refundable Expenses. The Host must remit 50% of the Listing Fee less Non-Refundable Expenses within 7 days of receiving notice of the cancellation.
  • No Refunds : A Traveler will receive no refund if the Traveler fails to
    • Cancel or request to cancel a Single-Day Experience 48 hours or less before its confirmed scheduled date; or
    • Appear on time to the Single-Day Experience.
  • Any request by Traveler to change or amend a booking once confirmed shall be accommodated if possible, subject to space availability. Any changes and additional costs resulting from such changes will be communicated to Members by email and through the Kumba Platform prior to final agreement.
  • If a Traveler cancels or requests to cancel a Multi-Day Experience at least 45 days before the confirmed scheduled start date of the Multi-Day Experience, the Traveler will be refunded an amount equal to Total Fees less any Deposit and Non-Refundable Expenses. The Host must remit 100% of the Listing Fee less Non-Refundable Expenses within 7 days of receiving notice of the cancellation.
  • If a Traveler cancels or requests to cancel a Multi-Day Experience 44-31 days before the confirmed scheduled start date of the Multi-Day Experience, Traveler will be refunded an amount equal to 50% of Total Fees less any Deposit and Non-Refundable Expenses. The Host must remit 50% of the Listing Fee less Non-Refundable Expenses within 7 days of receiving notice of the cancellation.
  • No Refunds: If a Traveler cancels or requests to cancel a Multi-Day Experience less than 31 days before the confirmed scheduled start date of the Multi-Day Experience, or does appear on time to the Multi-Day Experience, the Traveler will receive no refund. Special exceptions may apply to Travelers who booked the Multi-Day Experience less than 31 days before the confirmed scheduled start date of the Multi-Day Experience, within Kumba’s sole discretion.
  • If the Host cancels or requests to cancel an Experience at any time before the confirmed scheduled start date of the Experience, the Traveler will receive a complete (100%) refund, unless stated otherwise in these Terms. The Host must remit 100% of the funds it received from the Listing to Kumba within 7 days of cancelling, including all Non-Refundable Transactions.
  • If the Host cancels a Single-Day Experience during the Single-Day Experience, the Traveler will receive a complete (100%) refund, including all Non-Refundable Transactions, unless stated otherwise in these Terms. If the Host cancels a Multi-Day Experience during the Multi-Day Experience, the Traveler will receive a complete (100%) refund for the remaining days of the Multi-Day Experience, unless stated otherwise in these Terms. The Host must remit the refundable amount to Kumba within 7 days of cancelling.

If Kumba cancels an Experience, the Traveler will receive a complete (100%) refund. The Host must remit 100% of the funds it received from the Listing to Kumba within 7 days of the cancellation, including all Non-Refundable Transactions.

The above provisions are applicable to single-day, multi-day experiences and other Host Services.

As a Host, you can provide those Experiences, and get paid for it! Another way of making a living while showcasing your part of the world.

A local, an accredited/trained tour guide or a tour operating company that can provide an authentic Experience, are regarded as Kumba Hosts. Locals across Africa and tour guides are allowed to host Single Day Experiences lasting 2 hours to as much as a full day. Tour operating companies can host both Single and Multi-Day Experiences. Essentially, anyone can become a Host! Are you a talented foodie? Do you love your city and can’t wait to show the hidden gems through the eyes of a local? Or do you have an incredible skill that you would love to share? Or do you have a company that can organize an all-inclusive Experience? Then Kumba is a great avenue to get more customers, while showcasing your part of Africa.

As a Host, you can provide those Experiences, and get paid for it! Another way of making a living while showcasing your part of the world.

It’s a fairly straightforward process to sign up to be a Kumba Host. You can simply register as a Host on our website by clicking on ’Sign Up’ as a ‘Traveler’.

Download the Kumba Africa App from the Google Play Store and sign up to be a Host via email, Twitter, Google or Facebook. You will then need to create your Profile. Once you are done, you are ready to create your own Experience(s) by clicking on ‘Create Experience’. Also don’t worry, it’s completely free to sign-up as a Host! Every Host is required to set their own price. We call this price, the Experience Fee. This is the price that the Traveller will pay for the Experience you are providing, and you should account for the Service Fee related to your Experience, that Kumba will deduct when the time comes to transfer that money to you on the last business day of every month. The Service Fee for a Single-Day Experience is 5%. The Service Fee for a Multi-Day Experiences is 7%.

Think about what you want to receive, what is a fair price for your experience? Take into consideration the time and effort you will put in as well as any extra elements such as ingredients for dinner, fuel, entrance tickets etc. Remember to include your own mark-up/profit. You determine the price yourself. The Kumba Service Fee is automatically calculated and deducted from the total price. We ask you not to display your experiences for a lower price on other websites than Kumba. We’re an open marketplace so price competition between Hosts in the same area is likely.

All booking and payments made by Travellers, are done through Kumba’s platform. The money first enters Kumba’s bank account, before being distributed to each Host on the last business day of the month in which the payment was made by a Traveller for the Experience they want. For some Single-Day Experiences, Travellers will pay the Service Fee (5%) via Kumba’s platform, before being asked to pay the remaining Experience Fee (95%) on the day of the Experience, as CASH. For Multi-Day Experiences, all payments will be done via Kumba’s platform. Please refer to the Terms of Service.
When you sign up to be a Host, you will be asked to specify your preferred payment method from the following options:

You can always change your preferred method by going to your ‘Profile’.

For all countries, we can send money to you via wire transfer. However this is not the cheapest way for your receive your payments, as you are responsible for the fee associated with receiving the money from your bank. We are responsible for the fee associated with sending money to your bank. Help us, help you, by setting up a PayPal, Payoneer or Mobile Money Transfer account. It is possible for you to receive a request from a Traveller to offer your experience on a specific date. You can easily discuss this through our messaging system. If you have agreed upon the date and time, you can simply add the event to your calendar and notify the Traveller that the experience is ready to be booked by clicking on ‘Accept Request’ once you receive an in-App or email notification. You have 48 hours to respond to a Request, so ensure that you respond as soon as possible, and regularly check the Kumba App or website for booking requests.

It is possible for you to receive a request from a Traveller to offer your experience on a specific date. You can easily discuss this through our messaging system. If you have agreed upon the date and time, you can simply add the event to your calendar and notify the Traveller that the experience is ready to be booked by clicking on ‘Accept Request’ once you receive an in-App or email notification. You have 48 hours to respond to a Request, so ensure that you respond as soon as possible, and regularly check the Kumba App or website for booking requests.

Kumba offers Hosts a platform to offer their experience to Travellers from around the world. To enable Travellers to find Hosts and have an excellent customer experience, Kumba delivers several services:

  • An easy to use platform to receive and manage bookings.
  • Promotions of our Hosts and experiences on the platform and through many different marketing channels.
  • To administer the payments from the Traveller to local Hosts in a safe and secure way.
  • To deliver outstanding customer service that fulfils your needs. Our aim is to deliver happiness!

It is important that you set your availability for as far in advance as possible. We recommend 6 months. This means you need to go to your ‘Dashboard’ and set your availability for each Experience that you have created and clicking on ‘Set Availability’.

You can simply boost your sales by making yourself more available! When a potential Traveller contacts you via the messaging system, respond as quickly as possibly, and be courteous. Remember……even if they are wrong or not in a good mood, always be respectful and friendly, in order to secure a booking. Kumba is open for everyone. We’re always happy to welcome people with a passion for sharing authentic Experiences with Travellers in their community. For the specific Experience(s), please ensure that it is in compliance with the local rules and guidelines for tour guiding in your country or city, if applicable to your Experience. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact us, or seek legal advice from professionals within your city/country.

Once you’ve listed your experience(s), Travellers can get in touch with you via our platform. They can contact you for questions about the Experience, location, pricing, availability etc. You can follow-up via our messaging system. Once a booking is confirmed, you’ll receive the contact details of the Traveller and they will receive yours.

Yes, when you set the pricing you can indicate the price per person depending on the number of people.

Try to write an appealing description about your Experience. Whether it’s for a Single-Day or Multi-Day Experience, explain as thoroughly as possible what a Traveller can expect. People want to know what they are booking and paying for. For inspiration, take a look at how other Hosts have promoted their Experiences.

It is very important that the person displayed on Kumba’s platform actually performs the Experiences as promised. The exception to this is a Host that is a tour operating company, that will have the picture of the company representative, or company logo, and multiple employees of that company may host an Experience. So on Kumba’s platform (mobile App and website), the profile picture and information about the Host is always displayed. When a Traveller books an experience, he or she needs to be able to see who the Host will be. This way the Traveller knows exactly who he is dealing with and can choose whether or not he or she is willing to book the experience from the Host.

Yes, as a Host you are responsible for complying with the applicable tax laws in your country related to the payment you receive.

There are different payout terms for Single-Day and Multi-Day Experiences. Please refer to our Terms of Service. If you have any further questions, please email us at: hello@kumbafrica.co.

For bank transfers, the fee for sending money to the Host through our local bank is taken care of by us (Kumba). However, it is the Host’s responsibility to take care of the fee associated with receiving the money from your local bank. It is for this reason, that we recommend Hosts accept batch payments on a monthly basis from us (Kumba), for all Experiences that are hosted by the Host and booked and paid for in THAT month in which the payments were made by Travellers. We are always working on establishing partnerships with banks across Africa to reduce bank transfer receiving rates, for Hosts’ benefit.

Being a Host is a completely freelance position. You can choose your own days, dates, etc. on which you’re available. This can range for instance from half a day per month, to multiple days per week. The more you are available, the higher your chance of receiving bookings, and earning more money.

Great idea! The best way to do this is to create multiple profiles, but you can still all Host the same activity. This way, not only you, but also your friends can receive Travellers. This will also result in more bookings, which will benefit you all! You are still responsible and liable for your Experience(s), even if you have co-Hosts.

Yes, as a Host you are responsible for complying with the applicable tax laws in your country related to the payment you receive.

Of course, there’s a broad range of factors that influence how many booking requests you’ll receive. Some aspects you might not be able to influence, such as country, area etc. You will certainly increase the number of bookings if you write a great description of your Experience. Try to make your Experience as appealing as possible by highlighting the unique aspects. Also, offer competitive prices, and make sure you offer good availability in terms of dates and times. Good Hosts will be rewarded, because they will be booked more often based on positive reviews received by Travellers.

Yes, as a Host you are responsible for complying with the applicable tax laws in your country related to the payment you receive.

Reviews are very important to both Hosts and Travellers. The more positive the experience is, the more positive the Traveller’s review will be. And the more reviews Travellers write about Hosts after an experience, the more likely you will be booked by other Travellers. So make sure your Traveller knows about the importance of reviews and that he or she can write a review after the Experience.

It is critical that your safety comes first when you’re hosting an Experience. If you warn the Traveller(s) against acting in a negative manner, and they continue doing so, please let them know that the Experience will be stopped immediately and call police or your country’s emergency number if necessary. Once you are able to, and have guaranteed your safety again, immediately contact us via email and we will take the necessary steps forward. If you have a disagreement or anything of that sort with a Traveller that does not immediately place your safety at risk, please try and resolve it first with the Traveller, before taking any drastic measures such as discontinuing the Experience.

Congrats! You can now enjoy creating a 100% Customized Experience for your Traveller. If you want to do this simply create a new Experience that fits what the Traveller wants, by clicking on ‘Create Experience” and start making it as if you were creating any other Experience on Kumba. Once you are done, and the Listing is available on Kumba, message the Traveller, and ask them to book it through the platform. If it’s not a good time to accept the request, please consider proposing a new date. Ask the Traveller till when they’re staying in your area and create a personalized offer for that fits in that time span. If proposing another date is not possible, you could reject the request by clicking on the red ‘reject’ button. Please keep in mind that rejecting a request means that your confirmation rate will be influenced negatively. The confirmation rate shows the percentage of bookings that are confirmed by you. If this is low, it’s less appealing for Travellers to book your experience.

Kumba is open for everyone. However, it is up to you to make sure if there are any specific legal restrictions or laws applicable to the Experience you’re offering and to adhere to those. For example, if your Experience involves alcohol, it is not allowed to provide alcohol to underage people.

Hosting

If you would like an experience to take place at another time or date than offered, you can request a different date by canceling the existing Experience Request, and clicking the “Book Now” button on the same Experience Listing to schedule at another time and/or day. Together with your Host you can both agree on a date and time, by communicating using the ‘Message Host’ button. Subsequently the Host can set their availability for that agreed date and time and inform you to book it by selecting the requested date and time.

Before making a booking, you can contact a Host via the communication system of our platform by clicking on ‘Message Host’ when you open an Experience Listing. After the booking is confirmed by you and also confirmed by the Host, both of you receive confirmation email notifications containing each other’s contact details, in order to call each other IF necessary.

It varies per experience. Unless it’s explicitly mentioned, a pick-up/transfer is not included. However, some Hosts offer it as an additional service.

Most of our Hosts speak English, but the level of language skill will vary per Host. For each Experience listed on the app or website, the Hosts indicate which language(s) they speak.

We respect the privacy of our community and that’s why we ask you to postpone sending your contact details until a booking is confirmed. Immediately after confirmation, you’ll receive an email with the information you need to stay in touch with your Host until the start date of your Experience.

Reviews are very important to the users of Kumba, they help Travellers choose both the experience and their Host. You can only review an experience you’ve booked. You will be asked to review your experience with a Host after it has taken place. By reporting bad and rewarding great Hosts and experiences you are able to help improve the quality of the offers and give advice to other Travellers.

A Customized experience is a tailor made Experience for you. You can simply let us know your what you would like by clicking on ‘Plan Trip’ in the Menu of the website OR Android mobile application and we will schedule a free 20-30 minute consultation call with you as soon as possible. Once we have all the necessary information to make your dream trip possible, our various Hosts in your desired destinations will bid to provide you with the best Experience. We will then send you provisional itinerary options for you to view before you make your final decision.

Kumba is an open marketplace, which means that the booking is made between you and the local Host. To ensure safe and trustworthy experiences, we follow important steps such as verifying the identity of the the Host.

Every Traveller gets the opportunity to review his/her experience with a Host on a scale of 1-5, with 5 the highest rating a Host can receive. When lots of Travellers post lots of positive reviews, you are more certain you can trust the Host and the experience he or she offers. The Host also has the opportunity to rate a Traveller, after the Experience.

If you have a bad experience with a Host, Kumba will get in touch with both Traveller and Host to get to the bottom of the situation and to find a solution together. Your happiness and safety counts more than anything!

Every Traveller gets the opportunity to review his/her experience with a Host on a scale of 1-5, with 5 the highest rating a Host can receive. When lots of Travellers post lots of positive reviews, you are more certain you can trust the Host and the experience he or she offers. The Host also has the opportunity to rate a Traveller, after the Experience.

If a Host cancels the booking or does not show up this is very inconvenient. In this case the full amount will be refunded to you.

Before making a booking, if you have any question regarding an experience or Host, you can communicate directly with the Kumba Host through our chat platform. The Kumba Host is responsible to answer all your inquiries. Click on the ‘Message Host’ button in the Host’s Bio section. After you successfully make a booking, the Kumba Host’s name, email address and phone number will be shared with you. Nevertheless, you are advised to keep your correspondence on our chat platform in case you need our assistance. This is for your safety.

Our mobile app and website filters and search functions help you find the Experiences most relevant to your interests and destination. If you decide to book a Experience after reading its contents, please fill in the number of travelers you are booking for, the chosen date and click the ‘Book Now’ button. You will also be directed to the payment section where you can either choose to pay through your preferred payment method.

Kumba Hosts set up their availability through our app and website calendar. If you choose any of the available dates, the Host will accept your booking. You will be notified of your successful booking through the email address you registered with us and also receive a notification in the ‘Upcoming’ section of the mobile app tab OR website. You can also purchase travel insurance through our partner, World Nomads. In the rare unfortunate circumstance that the Host could not commit to your booking, he or she will contact you and rearrange directly with you to another suitable date. In the worst case scenario when no agreement can be reached, please feel to book another of the amazing experiences offered on Kumba Africa.
